Mediated content is controlled in some way. While reality is not controlled at all. For example, news stations, almost all of the information that is presented to the viewer is one-sided and biased to whichever side the writer prefers. Reality is what it is. You are unable to change it and control it.

In the Diamond Age, the Primer becomes a source for Nell that is mediated by Myranda. Through it she can discover and learn information that will help in her life or reality. The Primer eventually is mimicking Nell’s reality. It is telling the story that she is currently experiencing, and it is giving her advice on how to handle certain situations.

Mediated content can be a good thing in many scenarios. Nell’s learning from the Primer is one of those scenarios.

The mediated content is similar to things such as targeted ads today. Think about Google’s Adsense and how it is different for every person, it looks at what you’ve just searched for, what pages you are looking at, and you’re search history to create ads targeted specifically with you in mind. The mediated content is similar to this in that it is specific for each and every user and changes with them. Another similarity is the immersiveness of mediated content and it’s illusion from reality. The mediated content can be seen as an escape from reality and let you do things that are impossible in reality.
