The primer promotes independence by showing Nell that she can do things for herself, and she is perfectly capable of taking care of herself and others. It teaches her to rely less on others by teaching her things such as self defense, and cooking, and most importantly it shows her the power of learning and the importance of an education. We see now that instead of letting Harv read to her, or taking older people’s words for things she is exploring them herself through the book, and finding the truth.
The Primer in my opinion teaches nell to be completely self sufficient and to not rely on others people to do things for her such as the guy who approached her and Harv on beach she completely took ahold of the situation and was able to fend for herself. Its just like the incident with Kevin where she completely beat him up. the primer is teaching her stuff to apply in business and thats how its preparing to secure her future. i noticed in the book that the whole social structure is based on if you have a business and how successful it is. the Victorians being up at the top of the social pyramid are people who have a huge amount of income associated to a thriving company the people under that are people such as Brad who have their own business that pays for itself with some extra income. but then you have the people in the leased territories who work at the factories making barely enough to live. so i think the book promotes how to be a good business person and to not take people for fools
