The biggest parallel between gaming and education is some sort of reward system. I think games are appealing because the rewards are instant. As soon as you accomplish something, you can see/use it’s payoff right away. Maybe this is just speculation, but that may be the reason kids are so willing to learn in elementary school but not in high school. In elementary schools, you get a cookie, sticker, etc, right away. You can see the awesomeness you’ve achieved. You like the prize, so you’re willing to work for it. In high school, the rewards become clouded. Really, the reward is getting into a college you want, two, three or four years in the future. It’s really hard to see the prize. Also, elementary is fun. Good things happen if you succeed. In high school, bad things happen if you fail. People hound you to do things you can’t see the payoff for. Homework becomes just plain work.

I agree with dreamgirl41 in the sense that in gaming you get instant gratification and if you get that in an educational environment you are more likely to want to learn. I think that is why there are more games coming out that are geared towards little kids that can help them to learn, because if teachers can find a way to make learning fun and interisting then you will learn more. Like my Calc. 1 teacher in high school he always told some story in the middle of class that kept me interested in what he had to say and so I would hang on his every word just trying to absorb everything. I suppose the fact that he knows Calc and any thing related to math better then any teacher that I have ever had in the past also had something to do with the fact that I would pay close attention to everything he had to say, but the point is that if a teacher can make learning fun and interisting you will pay close attention and learn alot. I learned alot from him not only did I learn from his stories but from his teaching methods and you got that instant gratification is his class by him actually telling you that you did good on one of his tests.
