One Response to “Questions about Gee: What are semiotic domains?”

A semiotic domain is an avenue where we are allowed to experiment with different types of identities and characteristics with a greatly reduced chance of any real-world consequences.

Though it is mostly refered to in the context of online and virtual settings, a semiotic domain does not have to be in one of those categories. It could be something as simple as playing a board game such as Clue. In Clue you have a different identity for example, Mrs. White, Professor Plum, or Colonel Mustard. There are no real life consequences associated with the game, so therefore it is fine to experiment and be someone completely different than your typical self.
