Games, in reality, are nothing but self-esteem boosters. Story-wise, usually you are put in the shoes of the hero, or savior. Think about any game, from Halo to Zelda, Mario to Gears of War, you always play the person who saves the world from some catastrophic event or force. Outside the game-wise, video games are still a self-esteem booster. Every game has some sort of accomplishment system, and as you progress, it feels good. You are able to do something. Some games offer modes like “God Mode” or “Legendary” in which the game promises you’ll die. When you beat that mode, it really makes you feel good about yourself, in a nerdy way. . . .

I disagree. I think games offer good self-esteem but also bad self-esteem. It’s true, as dreamgirl41 said, that you are usual a hero who fights evil and save people but depending on your skill in the game playing can be very frustrating. When you win it feels good, like you succeeded in something but what if you never win? That can be a real downer, especially if the game seems to be easy to beat by everyone else.

The game might seem easy to other people because they are use to the game counsel and controller. Their self esteem was low when they first started playing games too I guarantee it. You have to work for success in video games and once you reach that point you start to get a high self esteem and want to continue playing.

There is quite a bit of self esteem that can be claimed from games. This typically involves running over other’s self esteem in the process however. For example in an FPS when you kill someone quite a bit they tend to get kind of angry while you are celebrating because you are “owning”.
In terms of the example I know best being World of Warcraft when you kill another person that person tends to get angry at you but you’re just celebrating as you kill them over and over again and thusly allowing your self esteem to rise as you re assert that you are better then that particular person.
